Current Perspectives: How Microbiomes Affect Skin Aging?

A recent study published in Life reviewed the current evidence on the effects of human microbiomes on skin aging and described possible interventions relating to human microbiomes that act by modulating skin health and aging.

The article described the multifactorial aging process of the skin, which is dependent on intrinsic, as well as extrinsic factors. Among the intrinsic factors, oxidative damage affects the skin’s antioxidant mechanism – for which, cellular senescence or apoptosis has been implicated.

Additionally, the human microbiota – both, the gut and the skin microbiome protect against pathogens. Alterations in the microbiota – “microbial dysbiosis”, also play a part in aging. Moreover, the skin aging process is the outcome of the combined interaction of the individual’s genome, microbiome and extrinsic exposures. Hence, future preventive strategies aimed at delaying aging should target modulating the harmful effects of extrinsic exposures that negatively influence the skin and accelerate aging. Also, skin protection and sustaining healthy skin conditions form an integral part of such a strategy.

Currently, available newer modalities that have shown benefits in treating dermatologic conditions include the adjunctive use of probiotics. The use of prebiotics and probiotics has also been advocated for increasing skin hydration and reducing toxins. Topical formulations containing plant and bacterial extracts have also been investigated. In addition, modifying age-related epigenetic pathways can be explored as a targeted therapy to combat aging.

However, clinical studies on skin anti-aging products are insufficient. Maintenance of health and adequate nutrition remains an essential aspect of the sustenance of healthy skin.
